The Tokyo National Museum was established in 1872, making it the oldest museum in Japan. It is also of the grandest scale, being comprised of four exhibition halls -the HONKAN, TOYOKAN, HEISEIKAN, and The Gallery of Horyüji Treasures -which together present over 2000 works on display at any given time. First of all, for reasons of conservation, Japanese and other Asian artworks cannot be exhibited for long periods of time, so there are almost no works on permanent display that can be guaranteed to be on view every time you visit. Although this book is not intended to provide a rotation schedule telling which objects can be viewed when, it does provide all the detailed information necessary to fully enjoy a visit the museum. This book also provides an introduction to the architecture of the buildings and garden on the museum grounds, summing up the various special features of the museum in an easy to understand way.
